College presidents seek to re-examine drinking age

advertisement

Two Ohio college presidents are among dozens nationwide who are asking lawmakers to consider whether the legal drinking age should be lowered from 21.

"If you asked college presidents in America, probably at least 90 percent of us would say that raising the drinking age has not been a positive thing on our campuses," said S. Georgia Nugent, president of Kenyon College in Knox County. "Let's look at, in a sense, education rather than prohibition."

But Mothers Against Drunk Driving was sharply critical of the proposal, according to the Associated Press, claiming that lowering the drinking age would lead to more fatal traffic accidents and could compromise campus safety.
